‘No’ Esmé!

July 30th, 2008 by admin in family, parenting

She started to wobble her head back at us a few days ago when we shook our head and said ‘No’ she shouldn’t do something. She’s got her head wobble down to a fine art now and when we say ‘No Esmé, don’t eat the cat biscuits’ she looks up to scrutinise our faces, wobbles her head as in agreement that it’s not allowed and then turns round to make a beeline for Misha’s biscuits.

So, not sure as yet whether she understands perfectly (I think she maybe does as she’ll virtually elbow you out of the way as you try and stop her) or if she’s still too young.

As it stands it’s hard to keep a stern look on your face when she’s checking to see how serious you – I think it’s fair to say she’s got me round her little finger!

FOR SALE: Honda Civic, 5 door, 2 ltr

July 28th, 2008 by admin in Uncategorized

It’s old (12 years old), it’s done 210,000 KM, but it’s been super reliable and would be a great cheap 1st car for a teenager or a cheap 2nd car for a family that need two cars. It’s also very nice to drive.

We’re selling it because we needed a 7-seater but otherwise would keep going with it.

Who was I kidding?

July 28th, 2008 by admin in Living in Spain

I had thought maybe that after 8 years in Spain that I’d got accustomed to the heat of the summer as it’s felt pleasant to date. This was made more pronounced after a week in Mallorca with a large chunk of the UK resident Andrews clan who asked on more than one occasion how we coped with ‘this heat’ when we thought it was actually quite fresh.

Anyway – myth dispelled as the summer has arrived in force. The last few days have been so hot that all you want to do during the day is sleep. Three or four o’clock in the afternoon is the real killer time when – despite having too much work to cope with and plenty of enthusiasm to tackle it – the heat just evaporates any energy you might have remaining.

It’s too hot

ha, I took the mickey out of James yesterday for saying the same thing. It’s the mid-afternoon that is the killer, you just feel soooo lethargic (yes, more than usual!) and can’t find enthusiasm for doing anything, especially work.

Jo went up to the pool with the kids and a load of friends and I had hoped to join them later on, but the timing didn’t work out so I’m sitting here at my desk with a sweat on :(

I might see if I can go for a run later on this evening..

Adsense conversion

July 21st, 2008 by admin in comment

I stuck adsense ads on here and also on Gabriel’s site partly to use it as a testbed for work purposes, partly because I thought what better way to earn a little pocket money for me and the kids? Gabe’s site quite bizarrely ranks very well for a couple of Doctor Who phrases so he gets a bit of traffic as a result, so I thought he might get a few clicks from that.

As it is our conversion rate is significantly below that which we get on selfcateringhols, something I’d like to resolve.

Looking at the ads that get displayed they don’t seem particularly relevant – the ads on my blog homepage are all about dentistry thanks to my daft post on loosing my tooth whereas the ads on Gabe’s homepage are all about holidays, I guess because of the recent post about going to Mallorca.

I would have thought though that the ads would become more specific when you click through to a particular posting. For instance if I look at a posting by Gabe about a Doctor Who doll he wanted I would have expected the ads to display something on subject rather than links to wordpress.

I suppose the lesson here is that to earn any proper money from advertising you need to target your audience and tailor your content accordingly. A blog that rambles on about whatever happens to be of interest at the time isn’t really going to do the job. Ah well!

bringing it all together

I was looking at Phil’s site (Phil ‘the lodger’ from about 15 years ago) – it’s a good blog and I like the way he brings all the various feeds from facebook, twitter etc all into one place, I need to do the same.

the importance of being a foodie

July 19th, 2008 by admin in family

Jo’s completely off her food – not only does she suffer if she deviates from plain boiled rice but she’s zero interest in food generally. It’s put me completely out of kilt somehow. It’s made me realise how much our world revolves around the planning/preparation and eating of food; I don’t get much backup from the kids who would really just rather eat pasta or rice with tomato sauce than anything else. Although it’s Jo who’s suffering I feel like it’s affecting me (me, me, me!!) almost as much – Jo always likes to joke how I jib in on other people’s illnesses!
